Bioshock Infinite
Although Bioshock Infinite is one of my favourite games on
the Xbox 360, it shows Elizabeth in a
negative way.
She
is a strong minded young woman who can tears though time and space,
she educated herself through books and reading. She even taught herself hundreds maybe even thousands of skills like lock-picking, decipher codes and gathering. However no matter how strong minded and skilled she is, she still sat around in a prison in a floating city to wait for a man to show. She still needed
to be saved though a male figure. Showing that men are the stronger sex and
woman are dependent on men. Regardless of their own strength. She
also runs round collecting things, like ammo, money, salt ext. rather than
helping you actually fight. This suggests that she is too weak to fight or that
her place was to assist the man doing the work, rather than doing it
herself.
Elizabeth is thin with an hourglass figure and a tinny tiny waist, however on a positive note she does not have ridiculously big boobs, however still stereotyping women suggesting that women should be thin. The time period is set in 1912, so the reason Elizabeth is portrait in this way would be because women in this time where. Very tiny waists wearing this style of outfit the style of hair (before Elizabeth cut hers off.) so I feel the games designers had ever right to put her in that style of outfit and give her an hourglass figure. I don't feel it was in any way meant to stereotype women as being thin.
An example of 1912 fashion and how Elizabeth has been based on this style -
Elizabeth could be positively enforce if she saved herself in her situation, fought for herself, rather then hiding and Booker helped her escape rather then saving her from the floating city.
Gears of War
Gears of war is a serious of games. The story line is about a group in the forces called the cogs that are fighting for there land against an alien race. The act like generic military organisations. The only thing different is that that all of the men in the Cog are extraordinarily muscular there torsos are bigger then there legs can take.
Twilight is a vampire movie with the target audience of teenage
girls. The storyline is of a girl who fall in love with a, not your not the
everyday vampire. She becomes obsessed and blinded of the dangers that could
arise by being with him. Edward (the vampire) does not deliberately or
intentionally hurt Bella (the teen girl) he keeps getting her into trouble,
causing her desperation and even unintentional bodily harm. Despite all of this
she still keeps running back to him. This suggests to young teens that if she
likes a guy, despite how much trouble he gets you into if she "loves"
him you should keep going back because having a boyfriend is more important
your own wellbeing and safety. As a young woman who has been in this type of
position myself, I feel that the twilight saga gives young teens the wrong
impression about relationships and "love".
Bella also happens to get pregnant in this serious of films.
Despite the fact keeping the baby will kill her, her maternal instincts kick in
and all she want to do is to protect it and doesn't think about her future or
the impact it will have on her family. She is also willing to give up her
loving Dad to spend the rest of her life with someone who struggles to keep her
safe. I interoperate this as telling the views that having a husband is more
important than family.
